....FOUND IT!!! It was hiding in the "save as draft area"... bloddy language barrier!!! so here is what I wrote the other day... if it contradicts anything else I wrote... I am sure you will get over it!!!
Wednesday: Capri was cool! Very Italian, have some classic pics from just walking around the back streets in Anacapri (the smaller town on the other side of the island). Unfortunately the Grotta Azzura (Blue Grotto) was closed due to rough seas on the day we were there... pictures in the shops look good though!!
Thursday: Megan and I hired a vespa and drove along the Amalfi coast, we stopped in Positano (Catriona Roundtree did a thing on Getaway a couple months ago)... expensive... but hey it is tourist season and that place was amazing!!
We kept cruising along the coast, and arrived at Grotta Smeraldo (the Green Grotto) as they were closing the gates... and they wouldn't let us in.... CRAPOLA - so Megan was a bit pissed at missing two grotto's in two days.
Friday: Went with two people from the hostel [Janne (German) and Mike (Canadian)] to Pompeii - it's amazing how much of the city is still there given that amount of crap that covered the city when Mt Vesuvius blew it's top. Something I didn't know was that the town suffered a huge earthquake in 63AD that really damaged the city. They finished rebuilding the town, and then in 79AD the volcano exploded covering the entire city - 2000 of the 20,000 population were killed in the disaster. There were a couple of people petrified and on display, the town was gassed and swamped in mud... not lava so that's why the buildings and peoples bodies were not destroyed... just buried alive. Mike was annoyed because he really wanted to see the petrified dog they always have there, but it has been sent to Canada for a one month exhibit... so by the time he gets home it will be back in Pompeii... irony anyone?
Saturday: "Not much happened today" ... (I think that quote was made by the British leader on the day of Independence in America.... clearly information travelled slowly back then - can't remember where I heard that, but it's a good one none the less). This was pretty much packing up and leaving Sorrento and catching a train to Firenze (Florence)... tip for first time travellers, you need a reservation for a "ES" train, this costs €12 at the ticket office, or €20 on the train... even with the Eurail ticket... oooopsy! Will be aiming NOT to catch an ES train in the future. Got to the hostel in Florence.... it's a converted villa - OMG!! It's is amazing, in a beautiful Tuscan scene and everything... staff aren't so friendly, but what the hell. Met this older american couple (in their 50's) and jsut kicked back on the porch in the mild 25 degree evening and had a session!! Dave ended up buying most of the beer, "We're not working to a daily budget like you guys" were his exact words, he and his partner have travelled like damn near everywhere (even spent 2 weeks in Tassie as part of a 4 month Aussie jaunt)... all good - I reckon I didn't spend much over €7 (about $12) and was quite well on my way when we called it a night.
Sunday (today): Spent the day walking around Florence - saw the Duomo (massive church), Ponte Veccio (the only bridge in Florence not to get blown up in WWII), the Uffizi (massive art museum) and a whole bunch of piazza's (squares) and monuments/statues.... pretty amazing but totally over relgious paintings... give me something a little more modern please... I am dying here!!!
Once again... Coke was my saviour about an hour ago, I was about to pass out from all the walking; the sweet caffeine goodness flowed over my lips like nectar from the gods!!!
Anyways - Siena tomorrow, then off to Bologna (the home of Spaghetti Bolognese), then to Venice, Verona and Milan... Megan leaves from Roma on the 6th ' so then I am off to Spain... going to miss La Tomatina, but hey... NEXT TIME!!!
Ciao
[by the way - i refuse to proof read this as am paying WAY TOO MUCH for Internet time, this is the cheapest place I have found, and is still €2 for an hour]
