Climbing at Coles Bay (14/10/06)

Headed out early Saturday morning with Phill. Drove to the 4wd track turn off with all the climbing gear and my bike in the car, while Phill rode from the shack. We met up and biked into Little Bluestone Bay.

First we had a crack at the climbs I scoped out a while ago, mentioned at bottom of this post. Damn, I think I be needing a bit more practice in the outdoor arena before we hit these ones again... or maybe just a few days off climbing before hand!

Anyways, after making a fool of myself on these, we made our way around to an area known as Rubix Cube.

What a day! Absolutely crystal blue skies... shame about the bloody wind and sea-spray,... but you can't have everything right! Ohh and before you say anything, YES, I am still wearing my bike shorts...

The view of Phill while top-belaying him out.

And an even better one with the wash in the background.

And finally, a look at my dodgy anchor points for the top belay. Hey, I felt safe, and that's all that matters. (P.S. I suggest no one shows Phills fiancé Sarah this!)

After climbing we hiked and bked back to the car, dumped the gear and joined in on the Freycinet Challenge MTB leg... well we kinda rode along and let all the competitors pass us. Damn, there are some REALLY fit people out there!!

Woe is the Tassie weather

People whinge about the weather in Tassie all the time, and I mean it's no wonder when we get stupid variations like this:

Max of 33.2 degrees in Hobart on Thursday, and down to basically 0 degrees overnight last night.... YAY for Tassie! Mind you, we love it here, and wouldn't have it any other way!

Hobart Bushfires

Amazing.. Wednesday and Thursday were the two worst days back-to-back ever on record as far as "Extreme Fire Danger" are concerned in Hobart. And didn't the firerys get a work out.

After controlling a large blaze in Mt Nelson Wednesday, a massive fire started at Risdon Vale. The hot, blustery winds pushed this fire south through the bush adjacent to Geilston Bay, Lindisfarne and through to the Tasman Highway as Mt Rummney and surrounding areas came under serious threat.

Check the Tas Fire website here

And here's some amazing shots taken by Ian Stewart that have done the email rounds today.

An amazing night panorama across the bay.

Surely some concerned residents here

The blaze in all it's glory - with all that smoke and flame, it's no wonder they shut down the Tasman Highway!!

AFL Grand Final BBQ Bonanza

Well, from all accounts the day was a total success!!

I really enjoyed cooking and getting it all happening. For those that watched the game, it provided some serious excitement all the way to the 1 point win for the West Coast Eagles. And for those that just chilled outside and socialised, the weather was awesome and there were no super-toolish-like-people to ruin the vibe.

The day started about 10:30am with my first drink of champagne while making the punch, continued through two rather large BBQ sessions, an overflowing bathtub of booze, and finished with Nick and Rimi still drinking at 2:30am while playing X-box.... WHAT A MASSIVE DAY!!!

I would like to get photo's from anyone that took them, so I can post 'em up for others to see, so email them through please.

And, in summary I'd like to say that if that party was any indication of the coming summer.... infact nah - let's quote Butterfingers here:
"It's comin into summer and the weather's F^&*in' WICKED!!"

BRING IT ON!

Devilish Irony

Talk about a 'once in a lifetime' shot!

Hilltop Hoods hangin in Hobes

Sarah and I went to see The Hilltop Hoods on Friday night at the Wrest Point Casino... it was crazy!! It was the final night of their "Stopping All Stations" tour. Same tour as when I saw them earlier at Mt Hotham - completely different atmosphere, but had just as much fun!!

There were so many people in the crowd - and they looked fantastic when the lights flared up!! They were filming for an upcoming DVD, so hopefully there will be some Hobart representatives on the DVD when it comes out.

Hobart Rivulet Tour

Went on the Rivulet Tour last week with Sarah, Gail, Craig and a bunch of his friends. It was really interesting learning some of the history of how 'Old Hobart Town' was developed and the role the rivulet had in that. Originally a source of fresh water for the aboriginies and first settlers, to an open sewer, and now the prime storm water system for Hobart.

Made originally out of sandstone, and subsequently augmented with red brick, cement, and even now violated by the steel constructions of the international 'Golden Arches' (not to name any fast food joints in particular).

It is the home of some kinda funky graffiti too (much better than having it in the streets!

Took a little side detour up one tunnel and found these - original convict bricks with the convict insignia and everything!!
