East Coast Easter Escape
Where to begin??
9 days up at the shack at Swanwick, who could complain? Even if the weather was dodgy for the most of it, that's just more motivation to do nothing!! Read two books - Matthew Reilly's Area 7 and Scarecrow.. totally loved both of them. It only took me a day to read Scarecrow, very fast paced action. For those of you that know my love affair with Jack Bauer, you'll appreciate this - Captain Shane Schofield USMC, the main character in these two books (and Ice Station) is UNREAL, I think he is EQUAL to Jack Bauer in all aspects of 'hardcoreness'* (* insert real English words here).
We got a couple days fishing, with a little snorkelling in, but no scuba unfortunately. Plenty of flathead, abalone and a couple of speared trumpeter.
Did a 4WD with Glen and Michelle into Friendly Beaches through track from the Coles Bay city limits in the hardcore Frontera.
Top views of the Friendly Beaches once we got there
... try telling me that Tassie isn't the best place in the world, with the best white sandy beaches (could only be better with a litte more heat I guess)
Also did a few mountain bike rides - there are sooo many tracks in the bush around Coles Bay... a literal plethora of options - no wonder each day was about 4-5 hours of riding. And here's the result of the second day's ride
Big bay view - not even a quarter-shot of the Friendly Beaches
Here's my bike - the Giant Iguana - overlooking Freshwater Lagoon
And on the final approach back to the shack, just a casual glance back over the shoulder reveals the famous Hazards, for which the Freycinet Peninsular is known for.
Unfortunately I didn't get pics from the kayaking on Friendly Beaches - a major issue of solo missions of such nature. But the cool story from that was when I first battled out over the breakers I was getting ready to catch the first wave of the day and saw this grey fin in the water and damn near packed my pants!! About 2 seconds later I noticed the horizontal tail fin... THANK GOD - a dolphin!! So anyways - playing around out there, this dolphin was doing laps around my kayak, and even surfed in on a few waves with me.... crazy stuff!!
All in all a MASSIVE week of relaxation and battery charging. So glad I took the extended time off over Easter - a MUST DO for everyone at this time of year I think!!
Keen as to get back up to the shack in the next few weeks if anyone's keen - ohh, also scoped out a few new climbs in near White Water Wall for those daring enough... top ropes and leads available!!
Here's the main rock with a few bolted climbs
The same rock, from other side - check out that overhang.. YES that is a bolted lead as well
Great crack!
